FROM POVERTY TO R23,7-MILLION RICHER ON A R5 QUICKPICK

30th Aug 2004

Troubled by a life of poverty, an unemployed Mpumalanga woman placed her faith on a R5 Quickpick LOTTO ticket to help turn the tide of her fortune.

Lady Luck smiled on the woman who this week walked into the National Lottery office and exchanged the Quickpick ticket for a R23,7-million jackpot cheque.

This put an end to the nation’s speculation of the identity of one of the National Lottery’s richest winners after the Jackpot rolled over from a guaranteed R20-million on June 5 to R23,7-million last Wednesday.

The fortunate woman, besides being the games’ biggest female winner to date and at age 26, one of the youngest millionaires created by LOTTO, has also become Mpumalanga’s biggest winner.

Described as “kind and humble’ by an Uthingo’s Winners Advisor, the winner said she has to first come to terms with becoming a multi-millionaire overnight before she can start celebrating her win.

“My family has known poverty for many years. Having to endure hardships became a way of life. Thankfully, things will be different now. It is very difficult for me to believe that this has really happened,” she said with tears in her eyes.

She has, however, decided that she will spend her money wisely as she still has many years ahead of her. The major portion of the money will be invested after she has bought a comfortable house and a car.

Asked why she only made contact with Uthingo late on Friday, she said she hadn’t bothered to check her ticket until then.

“I went into town on Friday and asked the retailer to check my ticket. After I handed him the ticket, he checked it on his terminal and advised me to make contact with Uthingo immediately,” she said.

“It was the longest weekend of my life. I counted the hours to Monday when I could finally exchange the ticket which I had kept securely in my handbag, for a R23,7-million cheque.”

“I somehow thought that once had I claimed my prize, my nerves would settle and I would be my old self again.

“But I have now realised that my life will never be same again. This is only the beginning of something new and wonderful and I intend to enjoy every minute of it,” LOTTO’s newest millionaire added.

Uthingo would like to remind players that they can contact the toll-free helpline Player Thusong on 0800 40 30 40 to see if they have a winning ticket. Uthingo also offers major winners emotional counselling and facilitates financial investment sessions.

As with the Mpumalanga winner, Uthingo also assists winners with the opening of bank accounts
