LOTTO syndicate wins jackpot

4th Sept, 2003

Saturday’s historic draw that took place live in Cape Town produced two Jackpot winners. A Gauteng syndicate of ten was crowned LOTTO’s biggest winning syndicate when they shared the guaranteed R20 million Jackpot prize with a player from Mpumalanga.

The group of men aged between 30 and 50 was in a festive mood when they visited the Uthingo offices in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon to claim their R10 million prize.

Some of the group’s members have known each other since school and have been playing LOTTO since its inception in March 2000. They have also been playing the same combinations, since launch.

“We play together at least once a month, when the stakes are high. Each person contributes equally and we take turns to purchase the tickets and check it after the draw,” explained one of the members.

LOTTO’s newest millionaires are all employed in different industries, ranging from retail, electronics, design and financial.

Nine of the ten friends reside in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. The tenth one was on the first plane to Johannesburg from Cape Town when he heard the good news.

“The person whose responsibility it was to check Saturday’s tickets phoned us all on Sunday. Needless to say no one took him seriously when he told us we’ve won. It took some convincing before we believed him.

One of the members heard about the good news from his wife, who went to fetch him on the golf course. “She was hysterical. I thought there was a death in the family,” said the avid sportsman jokingly.

Besides celebrating some more, most of the friends don’t have immediate plans on how they will spend their R1 million each. “I told my son that he could have a motorbike the day I won the LOTTO. I never thought this day would come and I was reminded about that promise on Sunday morning. So, parents be warned, you might just have to keep that promise after all,” he laughed.

“Syndicates have been very popular since the start of the Lottery and playing with a group made up of friends, family or work colleagues, creates a social aspect to playing LOTTO as well as improving each individual’s chance of winning something,” says Uthingo spokesperson, Moemise Motsepe.

In October, 2002 a group of family and friends from the Western Cape won the Jackpot of more than R7,6 million after deciding to play LOTTO as a group.
