Lotto defends its donation to parties
31st March 2004
The R3-million in Lotto funds that went to political parties did not come from
funds earmarked for good causes, the National Lotteries Board said on Tuesday.
Uthingo announced on Monday that it would donate R3-million to the country's
four leading political parties.
"The funds donated by Uthingo, the licensed operator of the National Lottery,
were drawn from the profits they generate in terms of the licence agreement,"
the board said in a statement.
The donation had no bearing on the funds accumulated in the National Lottery
Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) for good causes.
The board added that from April 1, 2003 until February 28, 2004, almost
R564-million had been allocated to charities alone.
In the same period, beneficiaries in the arts, culture and national heritage
sector received R325-million, while the sport and recreation sector were
allocated R219-million.
