Speechless after 30m win

9th March 2004

Johannesburg - Lotto's biggest winner claimed his R30m jackpot prize at the Uthingo offices in Auckland Park on Monday.

Employed as a tradesman in the manufacturing industry for the past few years, the Johannesburg resident, in his late 50s, intends to quit his job immediately.

The prize is the biggest single prize won in South African Lotto history.

Before the winner claimed his money, Uthingo provided emotional counselling and financial management to the winner.

Uthingo spokesperson Shenanda Janse van Rensburg said they would build a "trusting relationship" with the winner and keep in continous contact with him, in case he needed further advice and assistance.

The man, who chose not to reveal his identity, bought his quickpick ticket on Saturday, a couple of hours before the draw.

He checked it on Sunday against the draw results and realised he was the only winner in the jackpot category and therefore R30m richer.

Kept ticket in safe overnight
He said: "Words cannot describe the feeling when you suddenly realise that your life is about to change forever."

He phoned the National Lottery helpline, Player Thusong, on Sunday and made contact with one of Uthingo's advisors.

He had to wait until Monday, when their offices opened, to claim his prize. He kept the ticket in his safe overnight.

"Sunday was the longest day in my life. I knew my ticket was a winning one, but you still worry that something might go wrong."

The new Lotto king plans to buy a new car, clear his debts and invest the remainder of his winnings for now.

He will also donate some money to charity as he believes it is his duty to invest back into the community.

He has not yet decided which charities he will support.

Saturday's Lotto and Lotto Plus millionaires bring the total number of lottery millionaires to 372.
